Recount: Kapa Haka ( Quite a small one)

Inside the classroom was chaos. Children were flooding in the room, trying to get their mokos and their gold and yellow feathers on. As I entered, my friends pulled me into the changing rooms in the hall, shoving my Kapa Haka uniform on.

We ran to get my moko and feather, and sat down on the mat, folding our arms and sitting awkwardly. The class lined up and walked into the hall, we stood quietly in our spots waiting for the Kaia to call us on. The guitar strummed beautifully, hardly missing a note, and we began to sing.

We sang about 6 or 7 songs until we sat down for a few quick photos. All the year 6's took separate photos for the year 6 dinner, I'm a year 6 if you're wondering! Then we walked back into the classroom for 'Circle Time'.

Story Starters: There Was Smoke Everywhere...

 There was smoke everywhere.

It filled up the art room in Jade Mountain, and students coughed, sneezed and staggered backwards, bumping into one another. It was very hard for Peril to stay out of the way of scurrying students. especially when she was the one who made the room start smoking. For Peril, it was easy to start a fire.    It only took a small sweep of a tail and WHOOSH! The room would be set on fire. "WATCH OUT!" Peril yelled as a sandwing almost fell onto her wing, "Don't you know who I am?" Everyone at Jade Mountain Academy knew that Peril was Queen Scarlet's killer creature. So, it was a silly Question to       ask, even Peril knew that. "ARGHH! Forget it." Peril muttered, waving her talons in the air, trying to clear the smoke from her view. "Wait! No! Don't forget it! No! Ack!" Peril collided with a mudwing,   taller than she was. "Hey, um, Peril?" Suddenly Peril's brain started working, she knew this particular dragon. "Clay!" Peril cried, a large toothy grin emerging from the depths of her face, "I'm so sorry about the smoke! It was a TOTAL accident!" Clay looked at her, a little worried, but recovered when Peril said, " I didn't mean to! I just did. Sorry!" Clay grinned, " I know you didn't mean to. I bet it's hard trying to console your fire scales."

A loud thudding noise echoed through the hall. " OK! WHO DID IT?!" An adult female voice broke in, "COME ON! SHOW YOURSELF! Why does this always happen?" It was clear that the angry voice belonged to nobody but Tsunami, the most bad tempered seawing Peril had ever met. Well, according   to  Peril she was. Another voice cut in, this time a bit squeaky. Ok, way too squeaky for Peril. "Oh dear! I think we might have to include a smoke alarm in here! Actually, I think we should have smoke alarms in all the rooms in the school. Just to be safe. Oh! And fire alarms!" As Sunny said this she looked at Peril. Only a little bit though. Sunny was the only teacher at the jade mountain academy that was actually nice to Peril. Apart from Clay. Clay! But sometimes Peril just wanted to shove Sunny off a  cliff. Or something similar. For some reason It just felt right.

"Where's Starflight?" Clay asked, "Is he in the library?" Tsunami sighed dramatically, "Where else would he be, you handsome idiot?" Tsunami said cooly, catching Peril's eye. "Actually, I'm over here.  I was in the library, It's just that I couldn't stand the noise. You know? The screaming and all that?" Starflight said, looking at Tsunami, Clay, Sunny and Peril. "Um, you tell him." Tsunami, whispered to   Clay, " I hardly even know what happened." Clay looked at Peril, as if she could save him from the situation. "Um. Yes. It was me, but it was an accident. And... um... accidents happen?" Peril looked hopeful and there at that moment the muscles in her mouth broke down. Completely. Peril wrinkled her snout. "I'm sorry." She managed to say, "I just got a fright when the paint fell onto the canvas. Or let's say, EXPLODED." Peril tried to smile innocently. But it didn't work.

"DO YOU KNOW HOW EXPENSIVE THESE ARE?!" Tsunami thundered, "I SPENT A FORTUNE ON EACH OF THOSE!"  Clay came to Peril's rescue.  At the wrong moment. But thanks anyway Clay! "It's not Peril's fault guys." Clay argued, " And I don't think you should threaten Peril like that     Tsunami."  " Hey! But - I - " Tsunami stuttered, "  I did pay a fortune for those!"  Take that      Tsunami! Peril thought. " Hey! You guys!" Sunny cried, forcing the Mudwing and Seawing apart. " It's not fair for either of you! Now hug!" She ordered.  Orghh! Gross! Peril thought disgusted, It's only good if it's just me and Clay! Tsunami was the first one to pull away from the hug. Clay nodded. " I need to talk to Peril." He said. " Alone." Oooh!  What now Clay? Clay gestured for Peril to follow him and they both walked down the hall.

"Peril, this is important." Clay said, looking sideways at her. "I, um. I'm going to the sky palace. To     collect some more students. And... " Clay was starting to mumble now. " And? " Peril asked, "And I, um, was wondering if you would like to come with me? That is if you would like to." He asked shyly. "Of course!" Peril sang, hugging him. "Whoops! Did I burn you? Sorry! But yes! I want to come! Am I   being annoying?" Peril asked, eyes glittering in the sunlight. "Yay! I knew you'd say yes!" Clay whooped, " Come on!" He leapt of the ledge of the mountain and hovered in the sky, before motioning   Peril to follow him. Soon two silhouettes flew against the setting sun.

Story Starters

If you were wondering if this was real, I'll assure you this is fake. Although, I wish it were real! It would be super cool! 🐉

No one took notice of him, as if he was invisible. Sometimes they walked right past his tent and didn't even flinch. They're completely ignoring me! Eagle thought angrily, They should at least say hello! Eagle sniffled a little then sneezed. A plume of smoke erupted from his nose. Humph! Eagle sneezed again, this    time a sprout of fire flew out of Eagle's snout. The fire caught the cotton fabric on the tent, and started building up. Uh, oh! A small voice inside the back of Eagle's head screamed.

Suddenly the whole tent caught on fire. Eagle tried to move, but his feet were glued to the floor. "Help!" Eagle cried, "Somebody help me!" Eagle heard a distant scream from outside the tent, It must          have gone right through the fabric! Eagle realized.

Eagle pulled his feet away from  the dusty floor, and stumbled. He quickly got to his feet and scampered       over to the cupboard where the water vessels were stored.  They were quite heavy, since they were full with cold refreshing water.  Eagle trudged over to the fire, and splashed the water everywhere. Eagle         occasionally broke a few water vessels, but other than that, Eagle was doing well.

The fire was finally out, and Eagle was huffing and puffing. Whew! Eagle thought, That was hard work and I made it! Eagle collapsed to the floor with hardly any effort. He rolled over fast as a giant water vessel crashed where he would have been if he hadn't moved out of the way.    "Jeez!" Eagle muttered, " Didn't see that coming!" Eagle was slowly getting up, when a small dragonet flew in from outside the tent. " Watch out!" Eagle shouted, as the small dragonet collided with the Eagles stomach.        " Orghhh, Whahh?" Eagle groaned.

The small dragonet looked over to Eagle and squeaked in surprise. "EEP, EEP, EEP!"  Eagle looked sideways and walked over to the squeaking dragonet. "EEP!, Eep, eep?" Eagle picked up the dragonet as it squirmed and wriggled. " You, are one wriggly pipsqueak." The small dragonet stopped wriggling as if it were offended by Eagles words." EEP!" cried the dragonet." What now?" Eagle said. "You can't possibly be hungry, could you?" At the words of hungry, the dragonet perked up.

Story Starters

If you were wondering if this was real, I can assure you it's not. I made it really look like it was real, but I promise you, again, that it is not. Just try to enjoy the scene!

Josie hadn't meant for it to happen. She had accidentally hit 'send all' on the messaging app. Soon her driveway was full with cars that had party food and drinks in the boot.

They all piled out their cars 1 by 1, chatting and blabbering about how cool the party would be.

Oh dear, when mum and dad come home I'm gonna be in big trouble! Josie didn't want to think about punishments just yet - she had a party to sort out!

Josie had to do something - fast. " EVERYBODY! I KNOW YOU GOT MY MESSAGE BUT I ACCIDENTLY PRESSED 'SEND ALL' SO THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO BE HERE ARE CORNELIA BOYD, IVY MCMILLAN AND RIO SCOTT!" Josie yelled loudly.

I could feel my face flush, and that was when I totally lost It.

"EVERYONE APART FROM RIO SCOTT, IVY MCMILLAN AND CORNELIA BOYD CAN LEAVE NOW! GET OUT OF HERE!" Josie yelled, catching two little boys sneaking into the house.

Ivy, Rio and Cornelia came up to the front porch where I was standing, a look of confusion on their faces soon made Josie burst out laughing.

" Your faces!" Josie giggled pointing and clutching her side. She grabbed her friends and went inside to start the "actual" party just the four of them.

Retell: Firefighter saves kitten, By Josephine lambert

This is a true story written by me, except, I am pretending that I am the firefighter! 🐉 😄

This was a L3 writing activity.  We had to write from the firefighter's perspective.  Koka Ngaire wanted us to write more - but not waffle.

We used ARMS (add, remove, move & substitute) to recraft.  Next time I am going to work on the words that I use - so that my writing is more powerful.

Sirens blared as I stepped into the  small smoky house. As I, the brave firefighter, grasped the torch I was holding, I clomped inside with my heavy fireproof suit. The torch illuminated in the darkness, showing  a desk with overflowing papers half burned and half torn. On the other side of the room, there was a bed with ash spilled all over it. I pushed the burned door lightly, and the whole door collapsed onto the soot stained carpet. I then stepped forward into the room, shone my torch in all directions, and finally the right side of the floor.

There as far as the  naked eye could see, lay a young kitten, soot striped across his dark black nose and his spotted forehead - almost like a tiger's. I picked up the motionless creature, murmuring under my breath - ”you will be alright. Im sure of it.” I walked calmly towards the opened front door, stepped over the pile of smoking ash, and scampered outside.

I lay the kitten down on the concrete driveway, and poured the rest of my water bottle’s warm contents over the kitten. After that, I placed a air mask to his delicate mouth and nose, that would pump air into the lifeless creature’s lungs to keep the kittens heart pumping blood through his body. After a few minutes, the kitten struggled to get the mask off. Calmly I took it off the poor kittens mouth and started to dry him off. He was dry but now cold, I placed him on top of my arm and around my stomach - It was great to save a life and I was sure that I was going to save another again - yeah, pretty sure of that.

My fellow firefighters did one last check through the house - just in case there was another life to save that we didn’t notice, but when they all came back I knew that everything was going to be alright.  We talked to the lady who owned the house, drove to the petrol station to refill the truck with petrol, and back to the fire station.
